The countries on the Pacific coast have been using a substance known as Kava for treating mental ailments and depression. Kava resembles a pepper plant and its roots contain a substance which is known as Kavalactones which is said to be very beneficial in treating depression and anxiety. The roots of Kava are dried and ground and it is leached in water or milk and then drunk. The drink numbs the tongue and the lips and gives a feeling of well being. Due to the calming effect, it is much easier to fall asleep and has a few hours of refreshing sleep. However, Kava must not be consumed for extended periods as it can be hepatotoxic.
