How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks and Where do They Come From?

These home and professional methods will surely work...

What are stretch marks and where do they come from?

Streamers not too pretty lilac, pink or white twisting strips on the skin. They are not striking but create an uneven tone. Because of this, the skin even on the tightened tummy or perfect hips looks loose and flabby.

Stretch marks appear when one or another part of the body rapidly increases in volume. For any reason.

Here are the most common ones:
  • pregnancy and the accompanying growth of the abdomen;
  • lactation — there are cases when the bust becomes larger by 1–3 size
  • sharp weight gain;
  • excessive bodybuilding, because of which the muscles are rapidly increasing in size;
  • rapid growth spurts, which are observed in some adolescents during puberty;
  • regular use of drugs containing corticosteroids.

Normally, collagen and elastin are responsible for the ability of the skin to stretch and contract. But if for some reason these proteins are not enough, problems begin.

The middle layer of skin — dermis — just torn like a paper bag trying to pull on a larger thing. Tears are tightened by connective tissue. As a result, atrophic scars form. They are called stretch marks...

As with any scar, it is almost impossible to completely get rid of stretch marks. Affected skin penetrated by connective tissue will never return to its original state. But properly selected care and some procedures can make striae almost invisible.

How to remove stretch marks?

In theory, striae can be overcome at home. True, this applies only to the so-called fresh stretch marks. You can recognize them by the color — pink, purple, sometimes red-violet. The blood vessels with which only the formed scar tissue is pierced are responsible for these shades...

But gradually the vessels empty, the scars lighten and in the end, usually after 6–12 months turn into old stretch marks.

In the old striae, the pigment melanin is not produced, so they do not change their whitish color even when tanning.

On the old stretch marks, home gadgets do not work. Scar tissue is finally formed, and now it can be removed only by professional methods. We will deal with all available methods in more detail...

How to get rid of stretch marks at home?

The pharmacies sell a variety of ointments, creams, gels, promising to get rid of striae. However, there is no strong evidence that this cosmetics helps...

Nevertheless, in some cases, home care can be effective, so it makes sense to start the fight with striae with it. In order not to be disappointed in cosmetic procedures, keep in mind a few important points:

  • Use your chosen product on early stretch marks. It certainly will not help mature.
  • Apply a little ointment or cream to the skin — they need to be massaged properly. Massage enhances the effects of medical cosmetics.
  • Use the selected product every day for at least a few weeks. Before the result can appear, 2–3 month.

Here are some tools that scientists say can help..

1. Creams and ointments with retinoids

Retinoids (Adapalene, Tretinoin) — active substances that increase collagen production and accelerate skin regeneration. In one study, people applied tretinoin on the skin every night for 24 weeks. After this period it turned out that the stretch marks became much more inconspicuous than that of the participants in the control group who did not use any means.

Attention! If you are pregnant, be sure to consult your doctor. Retinoid medications can harm an unborn baby.

2. Hyaluronic acid products

Hyaluronic acid is also believed to be able to stimulate collagen production. Sometimes creams and ointments based on it are really capable of making striae invisible, giving the skin a more even tone.

3. Agents based on Centella Asiatica

Centella oil is one of the base oils in Ayurveda. And it really has useful properties. In particular, Centella also causes the skin to produce more collagen. There is some evidence that products based on oil or Centella extract visually smooth stretch marks.

4. Almond oil-based products

It has been proven that bitter almond oil can prevent the appearance of new stretch marks. So, one study showed: women who massaged the stomach with almond oil during pregnancy, the stretch marks, in the end, turned out to be significantly less than women who did not use the oil or applied it without massage.

But scientists are not sure of the ability of almond oil to cope with existing stretch marks: more or less convincing evidence has not yet been found. However, they were not particularly sought after. So it makes sense to try: you might be lucky.

5. Means based on cocoa butter, shea butter, olive, coconut, and others

These anti-stretch mark remedies have a powerful moisturizing effect. They soften the skin, make it more full and dense. Moisturized epidermis may partially mask the connective tissue underneath...

However, studies that would prove the unambiguous anti-tip effect of cocoa butter, shea butter and others do not exist...

How to get rid of stretch marks by professional methods?

If the home methods did not help or if we are talking about old stretch marks, with which massages and rubbing creams can no longer cope, you will have to go to a cosmetologist or dermatologist. Most likely, you will be offered to conduct one of the following procedures.

1. Laser therapy

The laser vaporizes part of the cells of the scar tissue, and at the same time forces the skin to enhance collagen synthesis. As a result, a new young and healthy skin is formed over deep stretch marks that can hide striae underneath...

2. Chemical peeling

An agent containing one or another concentrated acid will be applied to the skin. Peeling, like a laser, will dissolve part of the scar tissue and stimulate the growth of healthy skin.

3. Microdermabrasion

It is about mechanical grinding of the damaged area of the skin with a special device with a rotating round nozzle. The effect is approximately the same as that of laser therapy and chemical peels.

4. Various injection methods

A medic will introduce preparations under the skin that enhance collagen synthesis and increase the skin’s moisture level, which will make it denser and stretch marks under it — less noticeable.

5. Minor surgery

This is the most expensive and radical, but also the most reliable way. The skin area with stretch marks is simply removed. If it was small, the surgeon will apply a cosmetic suture that will dissolve almost completely without a trace after a while. If the stretch marks occupied a large area, the doctor will transplant a skin flap here from another part of the body.
